Why does ADHD so frequently go undiagnosed in women and girls?

Here's the long answer, from a study titled "A Review of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Women and Girls: Uncovering This Hidden Diagnosis" by ADHD experts, Dr. Patricia Quinn and Dr. Manisha Madhoo:

■ "Women and girls with ADHD have a distinct symptom presentation, with internalizing symptoms (eg, inattentiveness) being more prominent than externalizing symptoms (eg, impulsiveness and hyperactivity). Their symptoms are more likely to be overlooked by knowledgeable informants, and they are less likely to be referred for diagnosis and treatment.
■ "Females with ADHD may develop better coping strategies than males with ADHD and, as a result, can better mask or mitigate the impact of their ADHD symptoms.
■ "Missed diagnosis of ADHD in women and girls may occur when anxiety or depression presents in association with ADHD because symptoms of ADHD may mistakenly be attributed to the coexisting condition.
■ "Greater awareness on the part of health care professionals regarding the specific symptom profile of ADHD in women and girls is necessary for proper diagnosis and treatment."

The short answer? Sexism and ignorance. Womp womp.

Enough of that, I say!

Who I am, and why I created this Workshop

Hey, I'm Emma Magenta!

I'm a Life Coach for ADHD women. And I'm an ADHD woman myself!

In my line of work, I meet a lot of ADHD women, and hear a lot of their stories. One thing has really stood out to me: How frequently we ADHD women are let down by healthcare system.
Just recently a client told me a story about how she paid $1200 out of pocket for an ADHD evaluation.

The practitioner spent just 15 minutes interviewing her, 90 minutes doing computer tests, then emailed her the results two weeks later—after she followed up with him multiple times! (I'm sure you realize how bonkers it is that THE PERSON BEING EVALUATED FOR ADHD had to follow up with the practitioner!)

FYI, this is not at all an appropriate way to conduct an ADHD diagnosis, according to experts.

And the result? “No ADHD.” Meanwhile she has a list of ADHD traits as long as your arm, extending back into her earliest childhood memories.

Other women I’ve spoken to describe not knowing how to get themselves evaluated or diagnosed.

Being dismissed or disbelieved by their physicians.

Hearing “you’re too smart and successful to have ADHD” from PSYCHIATRISTS, who frankly should know better. That's ableism!

I know that a workshop titled “How to Get Diagnosed with ADHD” might sound like “diagnosis shopping”—going from doctor to doctor until you get the diagnosis you want.

That’s not what I recommend in this Workshop, in the accompanying Workbook, or in my practice as an ADHD coach.

In this workshop, I’m NOT teaching: “How to manipulate an uninformed healthcare practitioner to get the outcome you want.”

I’m teaching:

“How to locate a well-informed practitioner, and assemble the information that they will need from you, so that they can do a proper differential diagnosis on your case.”

Your path to diagnosis is laid out clearly in this workshop...

So you can find an EDUCATED practitioner who can do a proper, ADHD-women-informed evaluation.

So you can figure out what's going on with you. (Whether it's ADHD or not.)

So you can get the help that you need.

And get on with your wild and precious life!

Now, about that six-step Diagnosis Roadmap...

Inside the workshop, you're gonna learn:

  • The specific personal, historical information you'll need to give the healthcare practitioner, with questions and examples to jog your memory

  • Exactly who to ask for practitioner recommendations

  • Seven specific questions to ask a practitioner to ascertain their familiarity with diagnosing ADULT WOMEN

  • And those are just three of the steps!

This workshop covers THE SAME ADVICE I give my private clients, group coaching students,

and friends! about getting a diagnosis.

"Hi Emma, a quick note to let you know that I did some work with your EPIC workbook on getting a diagnosis. I found a couple of people, interviewed one using all seven questions. I decided she was good enough for my purposes...because I know exactly what my purpose of getting a diagnosis is (again, the workbook), and I'm moving forward with her. I'll update you again after the appointment but for now just wanted to let you know your materials are being put to good use! Thank you again!" - Anonymous

“I’ve been friends with Emma for years. I started reading her social posts about ADHD and finally realized why she and I have always vibed—I’m ADHD too! Emma has been an incredible resource for me as I navigate this new understanding of how my brain works. If you suspect you have ADHD and don’t really know what to do next, she’s your gal.” - Nicole D.

“I’d been suspecting for a while that I’m ADHD. So I spent an hour on the phone with Emma, and she helped me clarify why I wanted to get diagnosed, whether my suspicions were reasonable, what kind of practitioners to contact, and what to do next. I felt seen and heard, and Emma’s support was invaluable!” - Aisha I.

Got Qs? I got As!

Who is the ADHD Diagnosis Workshop best for?

Adult women who suspect they have ADHD, or know they have ADHD but are flummoxed by the process of getting a diagnosis.

Can I buy this and then get a refund?

Nope, sorry! It's a digital product and all sales are final. If you purchase and really dislike the Workshop however, I'd like to know more about what didn't work for you.

Do I really NEED an ADHD diagnosis? I'm pretty sure I have it, but I have plenty of support around it and I don't feel I need a diagnosis.

If you're thriving with ADHD and don't feel like you need a diagnosis, hooray! I absolutely love that for you, and I encourage you to roll with it. A (good) ADHD evaluation is an opportunity to receive a differential diagnosis—to figure out whether it's ADHD or something that LOOKS like ADHD—so that if it's NOT ADHD, you can get help for whatever it IS. But if you are thriving in your life, don't want to try medication, have plenty of support, and are confident you don't have other issues in play, then it's absolutely not for me or anybody else to tell you that you need a diagnosis.

What if I start this and get stuck?

I so feel you on this! This is why I created the Diagnosis Roadmap for you. It has six steps. So that if and when you put it down for a while, you can come back to it, see where you left off, and pick it up again.

Can you, Emma, personally help me get a diagnosis?

I'm a Life Coach for ADHD women, so I'm not qualified to diagnose you. I do have plenty of experience coaching clients through the diagnosis process, however. You can find out more about booking private sessions with me on my website.

When and how do I access the material after I purchase?

After you purchase, you'll see a page with links to the material. You'll also receive a copy in your email.

What's this about a Workbook? Does the Workbook come with the Workshop?

The ADHD Diagnosis Workbook is a 67-page, fillable workbook with plenty of space to record what you want to remember to tell the provider who evaluates you for ADHD. I've separated out the Workbook from the Workshop to keep the price low for those who are on tight budgets. You absolutely get the meat of the material through the Workshop alone, but if you have the change, I strongly suggest you get the Workbook too!

So let's wrap this up with a review:

When you grab a copy of the ADHD Diagnosis Workshop, you get:
